Hi, I am Micke Prag and I have been interested in hydroponics since I bought a house that included a greenhouse in 2017.
For several year I grew herbs, jalapeños, strawberries, and other plants hydroponically. But for a long time there was no automation nor any good way to monotor the systems.
I started looking around a bit and discovered that there are very few finished projects on the DIY side. Most of the projects you find are a collection of different components put together in a ratsnest. Some with open software but often abandoned. I started designing my own controller board. The first revision, as always, contained a couple of errors. Since I do this on a hobby level and pay for it myself, it quickly becomes costly. I therefore thought that maybe there are more people in the same position as me who may be interested the boards that are “left over”. I offered these on a forum and quickly got more interested than I had boards 🙂
So obviously there are interests in hydroponics automation and it is much more fun to hack something together with others. That is why I started openhydroponics.com as an attempt to gather like-minded people who want to build a platform for our hydroponics systems together.
I myself am a big advocate of OpenSource and I believe that it is a prerequisite for what we do that we keep it open, both code and hardware. With open specifications and reusable components, it will be easier for everyone who wants to help in the project to be able to develop both hardware and software that suits them.
